Granite thin section

#1 Post by jb89 » Mon Aug 05, 2019 1:52 pm

Messing around with my new 3.2 objective a little bit

Still taking pictures through my eyepiece, looks much better in person.

This thin section is actually very thick, it was one of the first ones I made in school and is absolutely not made well enough for research but thin sections always seem to be nice to look at!

looking good with your new scope! thanks for posting.

made me wonder how it would look with a regular compound microscope with inexpensive polarizing film adaption.

As long as the analyzer is optically clear the quality should be good.

Thanks!

In one of my field books there are instructions for making a DIY/portable polarizing microscope with a hand lens and polarizing film.

It's just generally not useful to use a polarizing scope on hand sample(for rocks, I have no idea about biology) so I have never bothered.

Curious, JB89, how long it takes to make a thin section? In hearing the process described, it sounded like an hour or two (or more, maybe a lot more) of work unless some sort of automated equipment was available.

PeteM,

My first one took many many hours, I broke a few slides and had to start all over more times than I'd like to admit.

With just the bare essentials it depends greatly on the general hardness of your sample, I had a jasper conglomerate that took me nearly 4 hours of hand griding.

A thin section machine and hot plate help quite a bit time wise, with them and some experience I think you could probably average close to 45 minutes per slide or less.
