Calcite thin section

#1 Post by jb89 » Mon Aug 26, 2019 10:29 pm

Just finished this calcite thin section, it's a fairly soft mineral so it was easy to make at home with sandpaper, I will probably make a new one soon and switch from coarse grit to a finer grit to prevent having the scratches visible in the final product.

I am not sure what this pattern is called in the thin section but it's quite nice to look at, figured you guys might enjoy it!

32x magnification, cross polarized light.

Nice! Its crystal twinning. Crystal twinning occurs when two separate crystals share some of the same crystal lattice points in a symmetrical manner. The result is an intergrowth of two separate crystals in a variety of specific configurations (wikipedia).

geo_man,

I you're absolutely right!

I am aware of twinning but haven't learned much about it in thin section, guess I gotta keep hitting the books!
