Two Favorite Amoebas from this week

#1 Post by mintakax » Thu Sep 05, 2019 4:45 am

I've been observing a lot of amoebas lately and here is a video of my two favorites from this week. Not the best videos but maybe someone might find them interesting.

I am taking a guess that the first is a Psuedodifflugia (maybe klarae ?) and the second could be a Mastigamoeba (possibly longifilum). I measured the second to be around 18um fully extended and the "whipper" was close to 60um at maximum length. Based on the size of the measured amoeba, I estimate the size of the shell of the first amoeba to be in the 13um range. I'd really like to know the correct IDs if mine are wrong or at leasts some hints at what species to look into.

Edit: I notice if I click the link from the post the video does not play smoothly, but if I paste the url into a new browser window it plays fine. I've had this issue with every vid I have posted here.

Really nice catch. I’ve seen this type of amoeba move pretty quickly when they don’t like the light, but I’ve never seen one pull it’s test like this.
Thanks for sharing.

I think they are very nicely filmed and very interesting.

The first one does not look like a Psuedodifflugia to me (having looked at the images at https://www.arcella.nl/genus-pseudodifflugia/ but I can not offer a suggestion as to the ID.

The second (another nice video) does look like it might be a Mastigamoeba

As always, Thank you 75RR-- It was some pictures like on the bottom of this page:
https://www.arcella.nl/pseudodifflugia-spec/

That led me down the pseudodifflugia road. At least that was the closest I could get.
