Freshwater shrimp

#1 Post by Chris Dee » Sat Oct 05, 2019 1:40 pm

Young shrimp trapped under the coverslip. Returned to my critter tank to go about its shrimpy busness.
4x Plan Acro through 3.3x NFK eyepiece, not got around to making a scale overlay yet, sorry. Diy oblique patch.

Pic' taken a couple of months ago Bob, started the tank late May. Weed growth has increased since the pic', duck weed covers the entire surface now. Its been as much fun watching the inhabitants through the tank as it has under the microscope :D Bubbler runs 12hrs on 12 off.

Nice video, thanks ! Nice that you returned it to its home. Do you use any lighting for the tank ? This is the first I've heard of bubbler on 12h, off 12h. Do you happen to know what the disadvantages are of constant bubbler ?

Hi mintakax. The 10L tank is in a north facing window without any additional lighting. Initially I ran it without a bubbler but it started to pong, so added a bubbler to see if it would help. It worked, but I noticed the algae population fall rapidly after 2 weeks. Changing it to 12/12 seems be the happy medium for this setup (note the clearer water on left side of tank). Some critters like the clearer water, others hang out in the murky side. Looking forward to seeing how the tank changes as winter draws near, most of the predatory invertebrates have already declined.

Nice catch. Good that you put it back.

For the video to appear in your post you need to place just the code in between the youtube brackets. In this case CIKGGMWJ3Jo Delete the rest

Hi Chris,
thank you for showing your pond aquarium!
I have one for 2 years now, a 30 l tank with soil as a first layer, tissue paper, fine grave on top. Normally placed in a sunny bay window facing west with sun from noon til sun down. Last year the water turned green and I started to let a bubbler run part time. This year it was placed in a cooler, south oriented room with blinds drawn when hot. It needed not bubbler this summer. For practical reasons I will change to a big vase instead of the aquarium and will more the inhabitants over soon.
Such a pons aquarium is a nice sourec eof samples and they can be released quickly.
