Fast Amoeboid
Fast Amoeboid
I haven't posted or been on the forum in a while because I sold my BHS/BH2 and procured a Nikon TMD DIC inverted and have been learning the ins and outs of this new scope. Anyways I found this super fast, kind of creepy amoeboid in a sample from my pond aquarium. It is the fastest amoeboid I have seen to date. I haven't calibrated for size yet, but this was taken using a 40x APO objective.

Thank you Glen !
Re: Fast Amoeboid
I hope you like your TMD as much I do mine - I'm just nuts over it! It instantly became my go-to work horse scope, and still is.
Love the amoeba video, that guy really scoots along, never seen one move like that before.

Re: Fast Amoeboid
Thanks for sharing mintakax, fascinating organism and a great video (as usual). I might have missed it but have you ever made a thread about your aquarium?
Any idea what the accompanying flagellated organism is next to the amoeboid? I keep seeing these in many of my samples too.

Thank you Wes ! I have no idea what the flagellate is and to be honest, there are scores of different creatures I see from my aquarium and cultures that I have no idea of their taxonomy apart from ciliate, flagellate or amoeboid. My aquarium is pretty simple. Its a 5 gal in my garage with 6 inches of water, an air bubbler, heater set at 63F and no lighting. Over the summer I "charged" it with plants, water and algae from a local pond. The plants have since turned into detritus on the bottom, but the algae appears to be healthy and contains many organisms.Over the winter I have replaced evaporated water with bottled spring water and feed it 3 or 4 kernels of boiled corn every week or so. My cultures (5 of them) are going crazy ! Massive amounts of bacteria, thousands of flagellates, lots of different amoebas, cysts, and some ciliates. One of the cultures has a large dominant population of Euplotes and Spirostomum.
How are your cultures doing ?

Re: Fast Amoeboid
they dried out.. the one that remains is exploding with bacteria and Colpidium (or something similar in appearance). I think I will add water to the dried out ones and see what springs back to life (last time I checked there were tons of Naegleria cysts).
