Synedra ulna

#1 Post by 75RR » Sat Feb 29, 2020 9:51 pm

.
Planapo 63x/1.4, DIC, 390µm length, 20µm width, stacked and stitched in Photoshop, Marine sample, Alboran Sea

Found this crazy long diatom (which I believe is Synedra ulna) on a drying slide. One can see the drop of water that surrounds it.

Linked image is 1500 pixels wide in order to make some more details visible.

Hi 75RR,
interesting, those many small globular items. Do you have any idea? Are these oil drops or chloroplasts?

Thanks WhyMe and ImperatorRex

I believe they are chloroplasts, I find it not uncommon in marine samples, particularly in Licmophora

Very nice photo ! I like the arrangement of the chloroplasts.
Last year, marine Ulva alga leaves were covered with "rosette" clusters of (maybe Synedra ?) long narrow diatoms. When they appear this spring, worthwhile to try and resolve the image to this level (albeit with phase, not DIC).
