Actinocyclus normanii

#1 Post by Sabatini » Thu May 14, 2020 5:40 pm

After seeing such excellent work done by all of you, I think it's only fair that the apprentices take courage from the experts and dare to publish their small works, this small sample, that I collected these days on the seashore with my small plankton net, I think it's an Actinocyclus normanii f. I found it about 40cm from the surface ,I think it was still alive when I photographed it with the cell phone ,I used an AE 40x Olimpus lens on the old Ortholux .

Well thank you for all that I learn with you and for such enjoyable and emotional readings of all your experiences.

Thank you.

Nice catch. How did you set your plankton net to trawl at that specific depth?

Were you on a boat or on shore?

As always, I'm very grateful for your attention.

I just put a little weight on it to go down to the required depth and I stand against the current and am up to my neck in water.

Very beautiful your work on Arachnoidiscus.

Charming diatom. Is it shown "as caught" in seawater ? or cleaned and mounted ?

hobbyst46.

Thank you for your interest

although I read a lot about how to clean and mount diatoms and in general other specimens to make my own specimen sheets I still consider it out of my reach due to the complexity and materials involved but I am always reading and documenting it in this forum.

these were collected on the beach in the morning and taken to the microscope in the afternoon, so they are alive at the moment of observing them, they were not treated in any way. there were many other beautiful and interesting beings and a lot of incredibly beautiful and new to me, bivalve larvae, fish larvae, many long diatoms like needles...etcetera

Hi,

https://www.diatoms.nl/ Sells pre-cleaned diatom samples plus all required mounting media.

May help you start doing your own slides without requiring all the aggressive chemicals.

Best, deBult

Great catch!
They are possibly more abundant in the spring.
Very fragile ! and are great for polarized light.

I hope that you do not mind that I re-post a similar one, from the Red Sea in 2018.
