Tube-dwelling diatoms. Social distance FAIL

#1 Post by c-krebs » Thu May 21, 2020 7:09 pm

Apparently these guys didn't get the message from their governor about social distancing these days.
I collected some alga during a low tide and as I was leaving I noticed a dark brown "slimey" mass about the sixe of a tennis ball floating a few feet out in the water. My suspicions were verified as soon as I looked at it under the stereo scope. The alga and diatom mass I collected were a treasure trove of subject matter that I have been photographing for about 3 days. Now it's time to process some of the images.

Back in 2016 I posted some other shots of tube-dwelling diatoms that, so far, I like better:

In those earlier shots the mucilaginous tubes were cleaner and more optically clear making the diatoms easier to see and photograph. But I've just started to look over this current batch so we will see.
