Campylodiscus decorus

#1 Post by 75RR » Fri May 29, 2020 3:45 pm

Zeiss Planapo 40x/1.0, DIC, 110µm, stacked in Photoshop, Marine sample, Alboran Sea.

Both photographs are from the same stack, first one consists of 67 images (the complete stack) and the second of 11 images.

That is 50+ images to be able to reach the edge of the diatom. Needless to say, they are not very flat!

"The Genus Campylodiscus
was established as long ago as 1841 by Ehrenberg, and has been accepted by all subsequent naturalists.
He characterised it by the twisted shape of the valves.
Modern diatomists have, however, restricted it to such Diatoms as have a frustule formed of
two saddle-shaped valves, which are placed at right angles to each other."

Thanks Sabatini

Touch-and-go for a bit. With all the slide to choose from for some reason the most interesting things usually end up on the edge of the cover slip!

Very nice stacks 75RR! I enoy the additional info and reference that you have provided, thank you very much.
A bit difficult for me to understand the real geometry, so I browsed for other illustrations in the internet and found the below very helpful:
http://www.lenaturaliste.net/forum/gale ... -27652.php
So the un-sharp parts of the diatome photo helps a bit to interpret the geometry better.
I assume your photo shows the diatome just from the opposite site?

Yes it is. Though it wasn't in that position. I think I appreciate it even more now!

Inserting your image for those that do not bother to follow links ;) + adding image from my link on the original post
