Rheinberg filters have been around a long time. You can make them your self or purchase a set on E-bay for about $30. These simple filters can add colour contrast with almost any microscope.
I am attaching some photos using a variety of techniques, polarization, bright field, dark-field, DIC, Rheinberg, Phase contrast for comparison. I think for their cost Rheinberg filters are good value. I made some, but they were not satisfactory, the plexi-glass filters availalble on Ebay were better and well worth their cost. In my article I link to a book by Mike Shaw that shows you how to make these filters out of thin acetate for those that want to do it yourself. There are also links to how others who make them with a colour laser printers. Most of the articles talk about designing them differentt sizes for different objectives which I don't think are necessary. They work well with 4, 10, 20 and 40X objectives. I put the filters on a cardboard box with a hole in it under the condensor or use a filter holder holder that I can raise and lower under the condenser with different objectives (I just use my hand and it works fine). Sometimes you get a better colour effects by holding the filter slightly to the side of the light path.
Polarization filters can also be added to any microscope easily - the Microbe hunter has a YouTube video and there are lots of tutorials online that show how to do it.
