Labeled Amoeba Pictures
Labeled Amoeba Pictures
Are these labels accurate? Might be hard to tell with a picture but I haven't uploaded the video yet. I don't know which vacuoles are contractile or food but since the one's I didn't label food vacuole kept disappearing and reappearing I am guessing they were the movement vacuoles.
edit: Actually all the vacuoles appeared and disappeared. How do you tell which are which?

Re: Labeled Amoeba Pictures
Do amoebas exist in three-dimensions? I always see images of them flat like cards. I think this was an amoeba. The shadows gave it a three-dimensional look that almost makes it unrecognizable. I may be wrong. What do you think?

Re: Labeled Amoeba Pictures
That could be one. There are a lot of different types of amoebas. The one you photographed seems to have be the typical blob shape with pseudopods. But in your picture I can't make out any vacuoles or nucleus but regardless it does look like an amoeba.
It never occurred to me that amoebas might move in 3d motion. They do appear to cling to the cover glass the way spilled water would. The one's in my pictures are probably the type that eat plants. But the type that mainly consume other microbes probably move more 3d like. I will have to try and film one without a cover glass to see if that frees up their movement.

The Wikipedia page is very helpful:

Thanks micro. I only wish my pictures were better. It was a "grab" shot, if you can imagine. My set-up is not built for sharpness.

My two cents-I’ve noticed when using some quite low N/A (ie 40x n/a 0.5) inverted objectives the extra depth of focus allows one to notice that amoebae do move in 3-d.sometimes flat against the slide, sometimes reaching up to grab something above it and sometimes just letting go of the slide altogether and moving free form in all directions! Never get tired of watching their antics.Lately love trying to catch a glimpse of a pseudopod coming out of a testate amoebae-a rare treat.

Would be interesting to see one on a slide that has grooves or something
