A Few Diatom Pictures

#1 Post by KurtM » Mon Jul 20, 2020 1:14 am

Now that I'm back home after almost 5 months on the road, I'm having a bit of fun in the lab and thought I'd share a few results.

Great to see your images again.

You don't happen to have photos of where they were collected? If I remember correctly you range quite far in your travels.

A bit of vicarious adventuring does us all good. :)

Thank you all for the nice comments! (Rod - good to see you!)

Glen, thanks for asking -- it really is a fun part of this nutty business and I need to remember to photograph my collecting locations. So here are a few pix, and although they're a 'blast from the past', it's where the Caloneis lewisii in the very colorful image was collected in 2016. I'm sorry to say I did no collecting in the 4 1/2 months I was hiding out this spring, too busy with other work.

The red arrows indicate the sort of thing I look for when on the hunt for diatoms: what looks like tufts of brownish-green fuzzy moss wavering with the current. Man cannot live on slimy rocks alone, you know!

Photos were taken on one of the San Saba River low water crossings near Fort McKavett, Texas.

Very nice photographs Kurt. No way I can do that. Don't even know where to start making my equipment ready for that.
