How do I place 'an avatar' with my posts?

Hi all...I'd like to plop an 'avatar' or icon or image with my posts...please advise me? In the user control panel is it a setting of my profile? Is it 'an attached signature'? All the best, charlie guevara (40 degrees F this am).
