Connecting Canon DSLR to Leitz trinocular head with all-Leitz components

Hi all, I've just been asked for a little detail of how I've attached my (Canon) DSLR to the trinocular-head of my Leitz Orthoplan. Here's a quick image to show the parts and how they fit together...

Thank you john, I mount mine directly via a 38 MM adapter with no internal eyepiece or optics between the trinoc and the camera. The image is extremely clear and because I use a 38 mm adapter tube represents the image as seen through the eyepieces. The only negative is it is not parfocal and requires adjustment of the fine focus. Unfortunately simply raising the camera goes in the wrong direction. Thus my interest in how you used the 0.32x lens as I have one as well. The trinoc has a built in 1.25X magnification which is probably why it works as well as it does.

What is the adapter containing the 0.32X optics called? Where did you obtain it?

Here is an example. No optics between trinoc and camera.

Some vibration in the camera as the mirror is not locked out. and I manually triggered the shutter. But you get the idea.

I quickly added the 0.32X optic and it requires moving the camera out similar to your arrangement and better reflects the FOV through the eyepiece. Although this would necessitate having a tube and an adapter to house the 0.32X like you have shown. Looks like these additional pieces are necessary to reflect the actual FOV 100% while being parfocal. When I take photos I generally do it when the camera is tethered to a laptop and trigger the shutter remotely. I focus via the image on the laptop and so being parfocal has never really been an issue but I would still like that option.

I connect my canon 1200d to the orthoplan photoport with a leitz 30 to 23 mm adapter; into this is a Brunel universal adapter; this connects to the camera via 37.5 mm ring araldited to a short canon extension tube. The camera connects to a. A Samsung laptop running the canon software; b. A 22 in AOC monitor and c. A canon remote lease ( for taking photos through the monitor) These three all plug in to the port on the camera. Live view is enabled on the camera. These are nearly par focal, but tweaking the microscope fine focus fixes that.

I'm checking the possibilities of connecting my Canon 1100D with my Leitz Dialux.
I'm aware of 3 options:
- Phototube + eyepiece, as mrsonchus showed.
- Using an adapter, like the Amscope Adapter or LM scope
- No optics, like Einman

Am I missing any options? My main question is, what about the field of view? Will I always end up with a 1.6 crop factor due to the APS-C size of my camera sensor?
Also, why is for example LM scope adapter around 10x more expensive than the Amscope adapter? Are the optics that much better producing noticeable better images?

Actually another option which I am now using gives me the entire FOV. It is a variable lens made by Leitz where you dial up the eyepieces being used so the FOV matches and is parfocal.

That sounds pretty cool. Are you happy with it?

yes. Interestingly it came with my scope but was frozen. I took it apart and lubed it, though it is still stiff. It works quite well and eliminates all the extra equipment.

Hi, you're nearly there for a basic set-up...... You have the parts to take you to a 23mm std-sized tube by the looks of things. Now all you need to get started in the most economical configuration is a 2-piece adapter to join a camera (presumably a DSLR with bayonet mount ala Canon) such as this,
**ADAPTER**

This is the most basic type to enable you to fit a camera atop the photport - and it works pretty well to get you started.

Hi, you can use the very basic adapter without a photo-eyepiece, but the (variable) adapter like einman's looks very good to me. Leitz do (did) indeed make photo-eyepieces (also called "projection" eyepieces I think) - I have one in use with my Orthoplan.
It has the usual eyeglasses symbol on it and a red dot.

Here's a picture of mine, complete with red dot,

A far as I know you can use another manufacturer's eyepiece but for optimal results a Leitz 'periplan' with no field-width number on it (such as 18) will match the Leitz objectives for correction (periplan) and tube-length (170mm) for my Orthoplan...

I use 2 adapters:

first a m45x0.75 to m42x1 (T-mount)

to that is attached a T mount for my camera.

Canon T3I. The adapters work with any Canon DSLR. If you do not have a Canon then you need to purchase the correct T-mount for your model.

Sorry, I don't have any detailed information about the "Vario Orthomat" but I think you will need another lens between the variable one and the camera sensor.

Please see my previous note, and this comment from the Seller:
"Fully tested with a Leitz Orthoplan. I also have the Vario Orthomat II head up for sale on eBay. Also listed on eBay is the Leitz Zoom tube 543-431"

Edit: I find it very confusing that einman is getting good results, apparently with no additional optics !
... What important point am I missing ???

maybe we need a additional optics, but the red block is our variable-lens right?,can we keep a long distance with the sensor? can we use a long adapter?
and maybe our camera need special setting?(this is the camera setting introduction in the adapter selling page,i can't translate it to english)
1.相机设置,在相机菜单里设置“无镜头拍摄”开启;
google tranlate
1. Camera settings, set "No lens shooting" in the camera menu to open;
2. Manual focus, LCD observation focus, use MF to zoom the focus function, zoom in 7 times or 14 times, visually determine whether the focus is very easy.
3. Auto exposure, shooting in A mode (aperture-priority AE mode), of course, you can also use M mode (full manual mode).

Point [2] seems to be telling us that the camera can be used 'without lens' when the zoom on the eyepiece is set somewhere in the range 7x to 14x

I can only suggest that you experiment.

Sorry, I will be out for a while ... but will resume this interesting discussion later.

I have a canon 60d and an ortholux with a trinocular head. I use this:

https://www.amazon.com/OMAX-Microscope- ... B01D914LT2

It works in any eyepiece so I do not need all the other attachments. It is a built in 2x lens.
