At mmc2019, I attended an excellent presentation by Dr Louis Keal
Today, I received a copy of his PowerPoint slides
Obviously he has a commercial interest; but this was just a masterly presentation of facts.
Hopefully ... This will link to the file in my Dropbox:

Mmm ...
75 views and only one response [for which I thank you, 75RR]
At the risk of wasting more of my Dropbox space, I have uploaded the presentation by Jeremy Sanderson [
whose recently published book is excellent] for your delectation and delight.

Michael,
Thanks for the post. It is a comprehensive and exhaustive review.
Excuses for keeping silent so far:
1. A part of the contents (with which I am familiar; e. g. Gain, ADC, noise) is not
very relevant for amateur photomicrography, at least not directly.
2. With local inside temperatures at the 30-35C, and local RH 65-70%, sensor pixels (and neurons) dissolve and merge into one blurred meaningless cloud.

1. puts his covering note into perspective
If half an hour wasn’t enough camera information for you, we offer full 2-day camera courses to cover all essential aspects of camera technology in detail, from the ground up. More information can be found at

... Yikes !!
2. That qualifies as a mighty fine excuse
