Olympus DP25

#1 Post by Element 56 » Mon Apr 20, 2020 7:26 pm

Hello,

I have an Olympus DP25 that I would like to hook up to my Windows 10 laptop. The DP25 uses a Firewire which I have no way to hook up.

The camera manual says to use an IEEE FIrewire cable and an IEEE 1394a Firewire PCI board. I started reading about hooking it up through the USB and got really confused really fast. I'm like a fish out of water with something like this and would really appreciate some help.

Has anyone here successfully done this?

Thank You,
Kirby

Kirby,

what type of machine do you have? Mac? PC? Laptop or desktop? What's the operating system?

Does it have thunderbolt port? What's the exact model of the laptop?

Well, if you have a USB 3.0 on your laptop, you can use an adapter like this on to "adapt" the connection, not the connection protocol itself. I cannot guarantee a successful connection, but it's not a money loss I guess. Worth a try.

And it doesn't support audio (again, different connection protocol). But in your case, it doesn't matter at all.

A proper Firewire adapter works on a PCI bus, but I don't think your laptop has a PCI-EXpress slot.

I was wrong the computer I'll be using is actually an HP not a Dell. It has Windows 10 and no thunderbolt port.

PCIe boards, to add FireWire 400 and/or 800 are readily available.

Note: The USB and FireWire protocols are very different ... so ‘adapters’ are best avoided.
