Hi Cyclops,
I think using the disk as a reflector seems to help.. I might try a small mirror and see if it does anything... Anyway, It looks like dark field to me... Very good!...

Good results with a DIY lighting system
Re: Tip of a Horsetail frond at various magnifications
Very nice, you've the prototype of a good & effective system there! Some very fine detail in the images too, good lighting has clearly helped the camera to focus well - keep it up there's some very good things going on there. Beautifully rich tones too.

Nice pics! I was just looking at an invasion by horsetail of the Rose Garden in Berkeley, CA.
Where did the LED light come from? It looks like it produces a powerful beam.

Does it have a brand name on it? There are a bunch of similar lamps on the web, but I haven't yet found that particular one yet.Cyclops wrote:I was sent it by someone on facebook, it is incredibly bright!CaterpillarGuy wrote:Nice pics! Hi CaterpillarGuy,
It is nowhere near a "little lamp"... It is 3 watts and is incredibly bright.. So much so, you can't bear to look directly at it...

"Little", dimensionally speaking. I'm looking for the whorled fins. Do they get hot?

Danged if I can find Cyclops' exact light amongst the zillions https://tinyurl.com/ph5gr4j in the universe of itty-bitty LED spotlights. They're mainly used for recessed lighting rather than microscopy, btw.
This one http://www.dx.com/p/e27-helical-luxeon- ... c6QsrKrS70 is very similar but is set up for a socket.
It runs on house current, but I saw others that run on 12V, either AC or DC.

I don't know the wattage of mine but it is insanely bright! The brightness control is off and just on. There's no real control, it's all or nothing!
