Pond creatures from the last couple of days

#1 Post by glennbech » Fri Apr 29, 2016 10:38 pm

I just mad a quick video of some of the most interesting creatures I have found in pond water lately. I collected water from a real pond three days ago, it's a lot more lively than what I got from underneath plants in my garden :-)

Can you guys help me identify the organisms? I see rotifers n the beginning, and recognize the algae, but the crab like thing I have no idea what is! The dark field segment has something that looks like a rotifer, but it seems to be moving more freely than others I have seen.

I couldn't help playing around a bit in iMovie.

It is a nauplius (crustacean) larva.

It is a nauplius
which I think grows up to be a Cyclops.

Nice video and nice shots of the diatoms.

Nice video.
My attempt at identification (subject to correction by the experts):
~ 40 s: green crescent shaped alga is Closterium
~ 43 s: again copepod nauplius
~ 49 s: a diatom
~ 56 s: (greenish) another diatom
near end of video, I think a ciliate but I cannot identify it.

I also found what seem to be an unfortunate diatom, but it also looks like the predator had a bad day. This is like coming to a crime scene where all the bad guys have shot each other :)

Looks like you have been busy. Nice selection of "Pond Life"
Zeiss Standard WL (somewhat fashion challenged) & Wild M8
Olympus E-P2 (Micro Four Thirds Camera)
