Odds and Ends
Odds and Ends
Some shots from the last couple of days. The Lake Michigan slides continue to produce interesting forms. My best effort at ID, but always open to correction, confirmation or conversation.
First up is two different looks at Fragilaria socia. Two illumination schemes and two individuals.
****UPDATE**** I now believe these to be Synedra goulardi. I realized that the size was incorrect for Fragilaria. Sorry for the misinformation, ID is still an exercise for me.
More info here: http://westerndiatoms.colorado.edu/taxa ... a_goulardi
Next is Gomphonema minuta, details here: http://westerndiatoms.colorado.edu/taxa ... eis_minuta
Lastly a broken Ellerbeckia arenaria, that caught my eye.

Re: Odds and Ends
Rod, those are great "odds and ends".
Re: Odds and Ends
They all look great. Something especially appealing to me about the second image.
Re: Odds and Ends
As Jim said - pretty impressive 'odds & ends' you have there my friend!
I particularly like image #3 - the 'mother ship and satellites' - lovely imaging.
Nicely done.

Thank you Charles. For as much information as Phase can deliver, the colors can be a bit too much at times, so darkfield can have a certain elegance.c-krebs wrote:They all look great. Something especially appealing to me about the second image.

I constantly see "space" images when looking at these diatoms. Galaxies, nebula, flying saucers.
Thanks
Rod
Re: Odds and Ends
Very nice, Rod.
#1 and #2 look like high performance kayak to my eyes.

Re: Odds and Ends
Very nice detail.
Like the shape of the Gomphonema minuta - such asymmetry makes it special

Given my knowledge of diatoms if you had told me it was a Gorgonzola I would have believed you. :)****UPDATE**** I now believe these to be Synedra goulardi. I realized that the size was incorrect for Fragilaria. Sorry for the misinformation, ID is still an exercise for me.

Re: Odds and Ends
All are, to my eyes, both very beautiful and show excellent detail. Thank you for sharing them.
Re: Odds and Ends
Thank you Seb and Gekko.
Given my knowledge of diatoms, I may accidentally throw in some cheese nomenclature....
Thanks.

I agree about the asymmetry, and this was a pretty big dog too.75RR wrote:Very nice detail.
