New, but still old stuff
New, but still old stuff
I am a sucker for old stuff in like-new conditions. Sharing with you a few of my recent purchases.
Bu accident I found a pristine absolutely mint condition Reichert microscope. Not a scratch and with the manual and paper documentation in new condition. I don't think it has ever been used. Impossible to resist. I think it is from the early 1920's. A little dusty in the picture, but look at the shiny metal parts. It produces an excellent image as well, but lack electric lightning.
Next item I bought was an old microtome from 1929. Also in mint condition and unbelievable finish. Resistance was futile. I planned to use it as my main microtome, but I think it is too nice looking to be abused as a microtome. Will remain eye candy I guess.
To get a work horse Microtome I found this one on ebay. A brand new, opened box, Reichert (American Optical) 820. From 1984. Been sitting in a box for over 30 years. Maybe as a spare, but these lumps of iron rarely break and the spare was most likely not needed.
The Reichert 820 I guess I will use. Perhaps...

Hi HKV,
Use them, they may be beautiful but they were designed and built as working tools (that's my opinion anyway).
My microtome has two cams which are operated using ball and socket joints the sockets are plastic, the plastic material perished leaving the microtome inoperable until I made new plastic sockets. I hope your microtones do not have similar problems.
I hope you have knives for these microtones.
Peter.

Beautiful! Thanks for posting those images. Perhaps a new forum section could be devoted specifically to images of old instruments?
Re: New, but still old stuff
No plastic parts on these items for sure. Yes, I have a collection of knives as well as a couple of hundred disposable blades and blade holder for the newest microtome. Should last a lifetime.Peter wrote:Hi HKV,
