I've just learned about Microscopy Today (http://www.microscopy-today.com).
The magazine seems to have a lot of articles of interest for amateur miscroscopists, like "Observation of Living Organisms in Environmental Samples by Transmission-Through-Dye Microscopy" in Volume 24, Issue 06 Nov 2016 (can't link to an individual article because of the site structure).
The magazine is free to download, and even the printed version seems to be free for USA/Canada/Mexico ($60/yr for other countries).

Re: Microscopy Today (free magazine)
Thanks for posting this. It's way over my head but is very interesting all the same.

Ha! I see they have a write-in questions column entitled "Dear Abbe". So they have a sense of humor.
