If you have potted plants try sampling the water in the drainage dish. Any mud puddle, birdbath, or pothole that fills with water can be a supply of interesting organisms. Any source of water that stands for a few days is a possibility.

With a fish tank I would take a scraping from the inside of the glass, a sample from down in the gravel (or whatever bottom substrate you are using), and a sample from the filter (if you use one). Also, if you have plants in the tank, gently scrape a sample from the surface of a leaf or stem. You might find amoeba, you might not. You might find something else interesting. Or not.
You could also try setting up a small tank or large jar specifically for protists. Mud in the bottom, a few plants, no fish or snails. It's worth a try if you haven't done this already.
