So the diatom is inside the ciliate? great.

Yes, they are diatoms. Frontonia and Chilodonella are great diatoms eaters

Beautiful and crisp illumination of this beautiful ciliate, Francisco, thank you! To my eyes this clear as a bell ciliate is Genus: Cryptopharynx. Try and 'google' images of: Cryptopharynx to compare with your prize video clip.

Thanks for your comment
In the search for Google gives me two very different versions:
http://protist.i.hosei.ac.jp/PDB/Images ... sp_02.html
http://guaminsects.myspecies.info/eol/44364/nojs
Some time ago I published this video identifying it (maybe wrongly) as Cryptopharynx:

I would like to know the name to correct the title of the video.
Thank you.

Wow, Francisco, you indeed are familiar with Genus: Cryptopharynx...I see no problem with my sense that this video, in this current post..is Cryptopharynx...different species may have different outter pellicle ornamentation...(the texts is free online/ open access) I am comfortable with Kudo's 5th edition: "Protozoology" description and illustrations of Cryptopharynx being same as this posts ciliate. Nice live prostist microscopy you share with us, thank you again. Charlie guevara

Hmm. ;) I think there's a problem with the identification, here. Cryptopharynx is a karyorelictean, and the organism in the OP is unmistakably a phyllopharyngean, either cyrtophorian or synhymeniid (the oral basket is very prominent). I think it is either Zosterodasys or Chilodontopsis (i.e. a synhymeniid). The habit of ingesting diatoms is very typical of both genera, and the overall shape of the cell is about right. A closer look at the hypostomial frange (a specialized row of cilia ahead of the mouth, partly visible here) would be useful.

Francisco, your second video is, indeed, Cryptopharynx. The image from the insects of Guam site is also Cryptopharynx. The image from from the Protist Information Server is misidentified, in my opinion (a cyrtophorian, I think, and probably chlamydodontid....cytopharyngeal basket is present, but partly out of focus).

Looking at the first video again, this morning, I think there is no hypostomial frange, but rather a preoral suture, so this is likely a chlamydodontid (Pseudochilodonopsis, Chilodonella, etc.). (Lots of chlamydodontids eat diatoms ;) ). Unless I'm misreading the images, the preoral suture appears to be fragmented, so Pseudochilodonopsis is likely.

Thank you very much Bruce
I try in the videos to show the most "relevant" features of the protozoa that I film but unfortunately I do not always get it.
Best regards

I think you're getting wonderful results! :) Identification by light microscope has always been challenging, but keeping track of the taxonomy gets more difficult every year.

Really nice video and so interesting to see something feeding on diatoms.
