Re: Desmid - Closterium
What a delicate crystalline crescent you share with us, thank you hkv..this evokes our crescent moon, complete with some 'green cheese'. Regards to an ID...I'm 'chiken' to advise you..but I will peek at my vintage library texts. Was this image capture from a fresh collected specimen? Charlie guevara
Re: Desmid - Closterium
Thanks all, and thanks charlie! Yes, freshwater specimen alive and kicking. I found a samole bottle that had been sitting in the garage with the screw cap on since april 2017. I noticed some green residue at the bottom and decided to take a look. Pediastrum and some other algae and these Closterium.charlie g wrote:What a delicate crystalline crescent you share with us, thank you hkv..this evokes our crescent moon, complete with some 'green cheese'. Re: Desmid - Closterium
I asked if this delicate protest was fresh collected/fresh observed due to the marked changes in the twin 'semi-cells' chloroplasts.
The very wide central gap (clear space in the middle of this desmid) suggests to me ( here we go with Charlie g's long shot...gulp!) you have a specimen of Closterium which is undergoing mitosis.
"The Biology of Desmids", Alan J. Brook, 1981, page # 104: " Several investigators have described cell division in Closterium....observations show that as mitosis proceeds the central gap between the chloroplasts of adjacent semicells widens as the spindle elongates.".
Then page # 106 has sequence of Closterium species stages...your individual, hkv, fits nice in the illustrated sequence of desmid appearances of my text.
Quite a few Closterium species...I don't have illustrated 'desmid atlases'! thanks for this image capture...again I ask...was it fresh collected/ fresh observed? Charlie guevara

Re: Desmid - Closterium
Great that you share with us the value for live organism microscopy which 'bottled/self contained microcosms' often offer us! Charlie guevara
Re: Desmid - Closterium
Yes, It was fresh observed. I sucked it out of the bottle and put in onto the slide with a water film. #1 cover slip. A lot of movement inside the desmid. Especially at the ends where a lot of small organelles were tumbling around.charlie g wrote:...again I ask...was it fresh collected/ fresh observed? Charlie guevara

Re: Desmid - Closterium
A very healthy Closterium. I very much enjoy observing the Brownian motion of the organelles.A lot of small organelles were tumbling around.

Re: Desmid - Closterium
Yes, yes, Jim T and hkv..those end compartments host 'tiny snow-globes' so to speak of gypsum granules...which beguilingly jiggle and tumble in Closterium desmids. Charlie g
