Worms come back to life after 42,000 years
Worms come back to life after 42,000 years
I hope they don't harbor any nasties.
Nematodes moving and eating again for the first time since the Pleistocene age in major scientific breakthrough, say experts.

The way the permafrost is melting up there we'll no doubt see a lot more of this.

Re: Worms come back to life after 42,000 years
Wonder if some fraction of humans, like those worms, who've had their bodies frozen will see the light of day some decades or centuries from now??
Re: Worms come back to life after 42,000 years
May not cause anymore nasties than is around today, people can and do die from flesh eating bacteria, just a starter.
Advanced Human population and polution is a big cause of ALL or most of the problems we have today. Anything from 42,000 years ago is a lot less of this.
No doubt species have been around for millions of years and many are extinct now.
Very interesting study with the nematodes and the scientist that are doing this work.

That is just incredible, I hope they find some water bears too because I can't imagine tardigrades letting nematodes get away with holding the record
Re: Worms come back to life after 42,000 years
Actually I find all of this very exciting.. I am sure this is all being done under controlled conditions to ensure nothing is released that could harm life on Earth.. There are some virulent diseases that have gone dormant.. Yersinia pestis being one of the most famous ones..coominya wrote:The way the permafrost is melting up there we'll no doubt see a lot more of this.

Skeletons in a mass grave from 1720–1721 in Martigues, France, yielded molecular evidence of the orientalis strain of Yersinia pestis, the organism responsible for bubonic plague.

Hi Gary B.GaryB wrote:That is just incredible, I hope they find some water bears too because I can't imagine tardigrades letting nematodes get away with holding the record
I agree.. As tough as tradigrades are, surely some have survived for centuries under the correct conditions..
The Best,
