Zeiss Standard WL digital camera?

#1 Post by docwarhol » Thu Jun 28, 2018 3:07 pm

I have an older Zeiss Standard WL (I believe) with the original Zeiss Ikon film camera . What do I need to hook up a modern digital camera? I have several Canon DSLRs, if that matters. Thank you. Need to resize the photo I took of the microscope, and will attach later.

Do post some photos of it in the My microscope section.

I use two different methods of attaching my Canon EOS camera to my Zeiss.

If you have the adapter with the 35mm camera attached, you can take the iris mechanism out of the adapter and use a screw in Canon adapter attached to the top. You will also need a relay lens in the photo tube.

Here is what mine looks like:

The second option is to get a microscope adapter to Canon adapter like this which just slides into your photo tube:

And, if you have a Canon EOS, you can use the EOS Utility program to give you live view on your computer or monitor and make still shots or movies.

Hi Charles,
Interesting plate riser in the first image. Can I bother you for more photos of it?

Joining the request, and asking: is the extra base plate important for stability of the microscope, given the heavy camera adapter, or just to enable fitting the lamp housing?

The base came with another microscope and it fit my Zeiss WL with a cutout in the back, which fits the 100W halogen illuminator. The base is made of some type of synthetic stone and I like it for not just accommodating the lighting but also for added stability with the wide base and securing clamps in the front.

I have a problem related to this. I got a Zeiss Standard 16 but I think 16 can use the same head as WL so I hope it is ok that i continue in this thread.

My Zeiss Standard 16 is attached to a Canon 7D using T2 adapter (2), objective 63 in T2 mount (3) and adapter ring for 40 mm tube (4) (Like this, but with 7D).
It does not fill the sensor of the 7D. What can I do to fix this? Am I missing a part from the original setup, or would I be better off getting a microscope adapter from eBay?

Part descriptions from a manual:

I think it would be helpful if you posted actual images of each individual part as well as an overall image.
Do include one of what you call 'objective 63'

The so-called 'Ojective 63' is effectively an objective lens [63mm focal length] for the camera, and is intended for afocal imaging.

I think what you are missing from the set-up is a microscope eyepiece.

It may be an idea to place a 'normal' eyepiece in the top part of the Siedentopf trinocular phototube. Perhaps the function of the 'Objective 63' is to turn it into a projecting eyepiece.

If the above does not help then you could also try raising or lowering the 'adapter ring for 40mm tube', as it looks adjustable.
Perhaps it has an effect on the camera field of view .
Then again it may just affect the fine focus.

Indeed, a KPL 10x/20 W eyepiece appears to be required, in the Zeiss manual and photo of the head-and-camera assembly above. In addition to the MC63.

Thank you guys. It did indeed help to insert an eyepiece into the phototube.

The eyepiece I am using is a S-Kpl 10x/20 (46 40 40)

Good news, arnev. Looks like there is no CA in the photo.
May I ask, does your setup include a camera lens or is it focal - just the eyepiece, MC63 adapter and the camera body?

Good to hear. You may want to adjust the height of that eyepiece to bring it into sharpest focus.
There is a 10mm height adjustment available once you loosen the Allen key screw on the phototube.
Just peer down it as you would on the binoculars, turn to focus and tighten.

No lens on the camera, just the eyepiece and MC63 adapter (with T2 adapter for Canon EOS instead of the original T2 adapter for Contax)

This does effect the camera field of view.

I am using a Canon 7D with APS-C sensor (22.3 x 14.9 mm)
Maybe a camera with full size sensor would be a better choice.

OK, I removed the iris mechanism from the large Zeiss adapter as suggested by Charles. Now I have a big hole where the M35 camera was attached. I'll need some sort of big adapter ring to fit in it. Is this something you buy? or something you make?

Also there were some other little bits in the light path, a prism and light detector. I removed them, but it looks like they are still intact in the photo. I was thinking of just plugging up the holes where I took them out.
