French Phase Contrast Diatoms
French Phase Contrast Diatoms
Hadn't fired up the Phase Contrast machine for a while, so threw the switch tonight.

Re: French Phase Contrast Diatoms
Had forgotten about phase imaged diatoms - it makes for very attractive images.

Thanks 75.
Phase can help dig out some details at times, and is fun for a change of pace.
Not in anyway stackable images though, so you have to make a "call" about the focus point, which opens the door to multiple options for each form. Kind of a nice exercise on occasion.
Thanks for responding

Re: French Phase Contrast Diatoms
Great photos.
I tried stacking phase images, and the results were OK, but aesthetically not as impressive as DIC image stacks.

Re: French Phase Contrast Diatoms
Very nice indeed. I really enjoyed the longer string of images, and especially like the first two in the second set.

Not much can compete with DIC! ;^)

That centric you liked caught my eye too. Seems to be very delicate, and shows some damage. It is the only one like it I found in 6 slides.
Re: French Phase Contrast Diatoms
As you're probably aware, I love broken diatoms. In recent samples it's like getting a bit of a dissection thrown in that give clues as to how the thing is constructed. Fossil sample is totally different, makes you wonder what all they went through in the past million years or two. That centric makes me wonder how it got broken just that way ... those are itty bitty little holes, how did they get there? Without the rest of the shell fracturing?

It really is amazing that these things survive at all. Tiny, intricate glass structures, encased in sedimentary rock, mined, freed by acid, mounted at 350 degrees F. How the aren't ALL broken is a bit of a miracle.

This may be the answer to the "holes" in diatoms...
