Amobeae tests (fresh water)
Amobeae tests (fresh water)
1st image. Plan 40x/0.65, DIC, 105µm, 30 image stack in Photoshop
2nd image. Plan 40x/0.65, DIC, 95µm, 32 image stack in Photoshop
3rd image. Plan 40x/0.65, DIC, 95µm, 19 image stack in Photoshop
4th image. Plan 40x/0.65, DIC, 80µm, 14 image stack in Photoshop
This is from an orchid pot which is designed to always have water in its base.
As it is a rather pretty green I have been meaning to see what it held.
So far a few rotifers and lots of testate amoebae

awesome shots - nice shapes to them, and nice colourings
did any have the amoeba inside? i was lucky enough to find one with the amoeba still inside it the other night but i don't find many like that for some reason.

Cheers 75RR,
Yep that's a really neat site, but I hadn't seen that page before, really useful.
Courtesy of that page I've now added an id to yet another image of mine, I'd called it a poached egg now know it's Diplophrys.
This is also a nice amoeba site, there's overlap between them.

Re: Amobeae tests (fresh water)
Nice work, an orchid pot eh, I know where there are lots of pots with water festering in them, I must have a look.

Thought I recognized the microscope. Very nice site.Hans Rothauscher is a member here.
There is a link to the wonderful drawings of Joseph Leidy on his site. I actually downloaded them (the plates and the plate descriptions) and combined them into a pdf.
Found the quality of the drawings better than those at archive.org
This is the link: https://www.dropbox.com/s/rvpwmdn31gxjn ... -.pdf?dl=0
Note: No need to join dropbox to download anything.
Just scroll to the bottom of the 'invite page' and press on 'No thanks, continue to view'
Then press download on top right of the page.

Thanks coominya,
Just goes to show that the adage "where there is water there is life " is quite true.

Hello 75RR,
I believe your amoebae belong to the genus Zonomyxa.

Re: Amobeae tests (fresh water)
Hello 75RR,
There are two very similar Genera:
Amphizonella found in dryer moss.
Zonomyxa living in Sphagnum.
(see also http://www1.nencki.gov.pl/pdf/ap/ap911.pdf)
Cheers,
Hans
I had based my guess on the countless small (< 1 µm) violet granules filling the cytoplasm.I believe your amoebae belong to the genus Zonomyxa.

Thanks for the link and the additional suspect :)Amphizonella found in dryer moss.
Zonomyxa living in Sphagnum.
I am unable to tell what type of moss the orchids are potted in so both Genus remain possible candidates.
