Amoeba meets its nemesis
Amoeba meets its nemesis
Could not identify the amoeba nor indeed get confirmation that it is one ...
Perhaps the topic title should allow for this and read Potential Amoeba meets its nemesis.
Doesn't quite have the same ring to it ...
Note: Have amended video title to Spirotrich

Re: Amoeba meets its nemesis
wow, interesting capture !
I've seen something like this myself - or at least part of it. Had the appearance of a cilliate 'trapped' inside a round shell or membrane - twitching and spinning around - i got the feeling that if i watched it long enough i'd see it 'hatch'?
Might be related or might not - but either way, I really like that video and hope to see any info you find

Intriguing event!
Re: Amoeba meets its nemesis
Thanks Aenima and Hobbyst46
Sounds like it could be something similar, only not hatched but more likely a ciliate entering a test/shell to catch a amoeba and then having difficulty extracting itself. That at least is what I gathered from what I saw and videoed.I've seen something like this myself - or at least part of it. Did you see it enter? Because my impression is that this looks a lot like a ciliate escaping from a resting cyst; it would be an unusual test, having almost no opening to pass out through.

I agree. It looks like the excystation of an organism.actinophrys wrote:Did you see it enter? Because my impression is that this looks a lot like a ciliate escaping from a resting cyst; it would be an unusual test, having almost no opening to pass out through.

I agree. It's a spirotrich ciliate (maybe a euplotid?), emerging from its cyst. Adoral membranelles are visible, early on.actinophrys wrote:Did you see it enter? Because my impression is that this looks a lot like a ciliate escaping from a resting cyst;

Many thanks actinophrys, SunshineLW and Bruce Taylor
My apologies Aenima
Going with spirotrich ciliate emerging from its cyst (have amended video title and intro)
These are the first 45 seconds of the original 5 min video:
