Re: pond life,beginer's pictures
I could be wrong (and I don't know for sure); that could be a diving beetle.
I am curious what that "I dont know 200x" is. A predatory ciliate? @Bruce Taylor or Josh will likely know.

Hi 9211 - what a great start!
I find your images very interesting, and definitely of a decent quality.
Please keep them coming, each is a new surprise - thanks for posting.
Keep up the good work my friend.

Re: pond life,beginer's pictures
Well, I do not really know, but here is what I can reason out. Said object does not look like anything on its own, but more like a fragment of something larger. From the texture I'd say it is from an arthropod – either a piece of a body or moult – so probably part of something like a leg. To find out for sure, I would try to see what else there is in the same pond.zzffnn wrote: am curious what that "I dont know 200x" is. A predatory ciliate? @Bruce Taylor or Josh will likely know.
For instance we could compare 92111's little insect. As the darkfield shows very well it has no wings, so it is immature, but unlike for instance beetle larvae it is still built like an adult. So it is one of the true bugs, I think a backswimmer larva (Notonectidae). Could the mystery object be from its kindred? It's hard to say – as shown here, their leg segments can have similar combs, but the more distal ones would have had brushes of long hairs too. But that's the sort of possibility I would consider.

Re: pond life,beginer's pictures
Superb images my friend!
I would say that not only are your images technically a very good start, but that you clearly 'have an eye' for just the right plane/s of focus to include in your image/s.
Images 2 & 3 are to my eyes a great example of selecting just the right level to reveal discreet features that many would be tempted to stack for an 'all in one' version (of course your images are here of different magnifications so wouldn't stack...) and in doing so I personally think remove or compromise a lot of detail and 'essence' of your subject.
More please if you get the time, I really like your style, even though this isn't my area I always like to follow interesting adventures such as yours.
Really well done. John.

Nice to see a pediastrum again. Have not seen one for a while.
I think you will find that your images would benefit from a little post processing.
Removing dust spots is always a plus + a little contrast and sharpening will produce results closer to what you saw through the eyepieces.
