Cyanobacteria - Gloeotrichia
Cyanobacteria - Gloeotrichia
Long time since I posted in this forum so I thought I would share a few images. I was out boating in august and noticed some small "algae" floating on the surface of the water. It was like small hairy balls and I took a sample in a beer can to check them out. To my surprise, they were not algae at all, but cyanobacterias. In fact, Gloeotrichia in colonial form. A very nice looking species, but hard to image due to all the hairs. Stacking is a pain due to artifacts in the final image which takes some manual work to remove. Some of these are stacked in several steps with the center in one go and the outer parts in a separate go. In the fluorescent images I have stained them with Acridine Orange for a few minutes. The inner part got less stain and remained green, whereas the outer hairs sucked up more of the staining fluid. Then rinsed in fresh water before imaging.

Great photos. To my taste the DF is nicest...
Re: Cyanobacteria - Gloeotrichia
A pain to image, maybe, but the results are spectacular! Don't be a stranger, your images are always so very nice.

Advantage of fluorescence imaging can be clearly seen with this subject.

Neat images.
Have you tried a cross-eye stereo of any of them ?

Re: Cyanobacteria - Gloeotrichia
No, I have not tried that. I have to struggle to see cross-eye stereo at all and mostly fail in doing so... Therefore, I never enable that feature when stacking. Would be neat to see these in 3D for sure.Grahame wrote:Neat images.

Hi Håkan,
really great images! Every time I see how beautiful and detailed nature is it becomes more and more difficult to understand how badly we treat it.
It's nice of you to decribe the amount of work and capability that was neede to make these images. So we are not disappointed when we can't get anywhere near!

Re: Cyanobacteria - Gloeotrichia
Bob, thanks! I agree. It i amazing to see how beautiful nature is. Especially when looking close. Also fascinating to understand that protists together make up 2 times as much biomass as all animals in the world. If we include bacteria, the biomass is 40 times more than of animals. And these are hidden to the naked eye unless we make them visible using our instruments!MicroBob wrote:Hi Håkan,
