Fan-shaped diatoms colony
Fan-shaped diatoms colony
Hi everyone,
I came across this beautiful organization of diatoms attached to Ulva lactuca (green Mediterranean algae).
x16 Neofluar, zoomed-in while the picture was taken.
What is the Gender & specie of these diatoms ?

Re: Fan-shaped diatoms colony
Part of the fun in microscopy is attempting to identify the organisms you find. Any suggestions, guesses, inquiries based on your own research?
Re: Fan-shaped diatoms colony
Looks like it might be Licmophora sp.
(sp. means that the species is not identified) Generally just getting to Genera is considered pretty good.

Indeed, it looks like Licmophora sp. After some research, it could be Licmophora flabellata.

Thought for a brief moment that you had taken a giant leap in your photo-microscopy skills ;)
Now that you know what can be done ... hope it inspires you!
You should try a van Egmond mask: viewtopic.php?f=15&t=4499

Re: Fan-shaped diatoms colony
You should be able to download the pdf ... and then print them on Inkjet Printable Transparency Film
Your local photocopy shop should be able to do it.

Thanks, I'll do that then !
Re: Fan-shaped diatoms colony
Your original photo is quite good and it looks like your research skills are better than you may have thought!
