Mallow Pollen
This is from an old slide [mounter: H E Ebbage], made for incident illumination, and labelled CONDENSER
I cheated, and simply placed one of the little LED MiniBulb domes on the stage !!

Those are very nice, thanks ! I have just finished the construction of the latest STLR (Stage Top LED Ring) mark II, from six 5mm LEDs around the objective. Historically, Mallow has been an edible plant, and spread everywhere, but now it is less widespread. I will try and hunt the pollens. If there are still live plants. If not, then "to do" on next December.

Re: Mallow Pollen
Is the 'led mini-bulb dome' described in detail somewhere?
Re: Mallow Pollen
It's the ridiculously cheap, and very effective, ebay item that I have recommended several times.iconoclastica wrote:Is the 'led mini-bulb dome' described in detail somewhere?
I will find you a link

Edit: Sorry, it looks like they may be obsolete already ... I can't find them currently listed on ebay.
Edit: This should link to an old listing:

Hi Michael,
beautiful image! In the nature there is so much fine detail hidden from the bare eye.
I remembered your LED dome light, but I couldn't really imagine how you could have used it comfortably for incident lighting.
With the search terms led usb 3w one gets a listing of chinese stuff that seems to contain quite a few very interesting products, like a 3W UV led to cure UV glued finger nails or a small articulating lamp with a suction socket.
I recently bought a chinese work lamp (10 or 20 chinese Watts), powered by 1 to 4 18650 Lithium batteries. It works very well when the expectations stay reasonable and it was just a bit over 10€.

...
I was using the little Wild M11, with its gliding circular stage, and simply placed the dome on the stage.
... I was amazed at the 'quality' of the light [which is similar to a bright overcast sky, in landscape terms]. This is presumably attributable to the grade of plastic used for the diffusing dome, and the effort that has gone into its design and manufacture.
Thought I should share this, to demonstrate that lighting can [sometimes] be easy

Oh Michael, a really nice image. Captures the spiny-spheres crisply!
As others have said, the hidden details you've shown us are a real treat to the eye, and to the brain come to that.
Lovely work Michael - more.... you know you must!

Thanks. I know these and even may still have a couple of them somewhere. Only I never read that name before, nor did I ever see them in conjunction with my microscope. I'll give it a try then, later this year.MichaelG. wrote: It's the ridiculously cheap, and very effective, ebay item that I have recommended several times.

A quick update:
There is what appears to be a rather good lantern slide of the same subject on ebay:

... Much more informative than my scan of the microscope slide !!
