Finally, I got an ortholux

#1 Post by Aslan » Tue Oct 01, 2019 2:26 pm

I have always wanted an ortholux, ever since I first used one in graduate school in the late 80's. Even then they were old but I loved the styling and of course the optics were superb. I could never have afforded one then so I got, for me, the next best thing, an SM microscope that I still use and love. Recently, I found one on ebay for what I think was a great price (actually I've seen the Berek condenser of this microscope go for more than they were asking for the microscope). It was a bit of a Frankenscope having an Olympus stage but I decided it was time I got myself the ortholux I had always wanted.

Hi Aslan,
congratulations to your new heavy weight microscope!
They must have been outrageously modern when they came out in the late 1930s and they are especially durable without mechanical problem areas.
Leitz was more willing to develop special add-ons than Zeiss and this makes it a life-time job to hunt down everything that has been made for this microscope.

Hi-in response to your original post:
I JUST unpacked one from Ebay yesterday. My personal story is similar: I have a wonderful couple of SM black models. I have NEVER previously laid hands on an ortholux but used a Diaplan in grad school (a good while ago!) My "new" scope has several unexpected issues. It was a crazy impulse buy and I did not examine the sellers pic closely enough. I need some help-see my other new post. Your scope looks wonderful!
