Leica Sli LED Illuminator repairs

#1 Post by fossilexpress » Wed Dec 25, 2019 2:51 am

I have a Leica Sli LED Illuminator with fiber optic cables. It no longer turns on. Any tips on troubleshooting/repairs? Leica says it will not repair, so I will have to spend $950 for a replacement. All my other illuminators have replaceable bulbs, so I am surprised there is not an obvious way to do this here. Any help appreciated. - Roy

Ouch !!

That is astonishing, and I would say unacceptable.

Treat it as a challenge ... the problem can only be LED, PSU, Switch, or connections.

.

Edit: Can you please clarify which model you have ?
... a quick search on Leica’s site revealed several; but they appear to have LED heads mounted on goosenecks, rather than fibre optics.

Thanks. It is an LED5000. It does not turn on. Will first try to swap the cable. Roy

I hope it ends up being fixable.

Is there a particular Leica-specofic feature that makes the led5000 particularly good for your usecase?

The unit attaches to the stand of the Leica microscope. Other than that, I am not married to the Leica. Meanwhile I am using a much older fiber optic illuminator that i used for my old Wild M5. - Roy

Volpi made fiber goosenecks that clip on to at least some leica focus mounts, though this one is for the older style rack and pinion https://rover.ebay.com/rover/0/0/0?mpre ... 3986506082
I just clamped one onto the back of my Olympus stand with literal hardware store clamps which works just as well.
It's pretty lame they won't give you any service on it. The entire reason you'd shell out for a Leica accessory like this (which they likely don't even make themselves) is for the support, rather than buying 12 other illuminators for the same price (or 75 ikea clip on gooseneck lamps).

Try an independent serviceman.
They may do it. In Czech Republic I know at least 5 of them.
Or give it to some one who fixes TVs :)

Hi, I have one of those, with the lamp-unit, working perfectly. The first 'arm' section is flexible, with the clamp, then two 'gooseneck' stay-where-you-put-them fiber-optic arms branch from a Y junction - allows the lamp to be far from the 'scope, and the Y piece to clamp to your 'scope.... I'd be happy to sell this one on as it's just languishing in one of my cabinets - I have a Schott that I use with my stereo 'scope.

It's a Volpi Intralux 400, here's an image,

Let me know if you'd like to buy it - I'm not using it....

John B.:
thanks. I have a Volpi Intralux 150 H, which I will use instead of the Leica. - Roy

One popped up on eBay, might be worth making an offer if you're still after one.
