BH2 BHS MTV

#1 Post by thomas.schwarz » Thu Jan 09, 2020 7:39 pm

Hello friends,

How do i connect this camera to this photo tube? Any tips on general solutions, or better to just search for Nikon-olympus specific adapters?

Ok grasshopper is learning. I did read http://www.alanwood.net/photography/oly ... ml#adapter

And I unscrewed that black flange that is not stock mtv3... so now it looks like this (photo). Still how would the camera go on the silver part? And that little plastic or glass, almost round, pinkish lens was just a protector, yes?

The mtv adapter has reducing optics built in. It is meant for small sensor cameras. All you need is empty space between your 2.5x nfk and your camera sensor.

Thanks Scarodactyl. That makes sense. And if I lay the camera, without the big camera lens/zoom, directly on the silver MTV-3 tube, it sits there fine. But does one attache the camera to the silver flange on the MTV-3? Should the physical connection just be improvised (e.g. duct tape)?

Thanks!!! ...there is written:
"For Nikon F camera bodies, it is not possible to make an adapter, but it is possible to remove the OM mount from the Photomicro Adapter L and attach a Nikon F mount."

So no standard lens adapter for MTV-3 to Nikon according to Alan Wood? Did I get that right?

I'm not clear why you are wanting to attach the camera to a TV adapter, instead of one of the adapters listed?

Right so here is my best effort (and the Nikon sales guy's best effort) to find a lens adapter. So I could glue it to the black flange (better) or directly on the silver end of the mtv-3 tube. Sound Ok?

And more important general question about the diameter of the mtv-3 terminal end....
1) why so small? My cameras senser is bigger....
2) is bigger Better (photo tube and senser)?
3) what is considered state of the art for a bh2 photo tube and camera w/video?

Well the examples show the lens adapter (T Adapter) upside down. But you get the idea...

Interesting, this one looks like it could fit. Is this what Alan meant by F Adapter? Do you think it will fit on the mtv-3 silver end?

As we've said it's because this is an adapter for small sensor cameras, not for slrs. It is the wrong part. The part you want is a photomicro adapter L, or you can get a third party adapter, or you can make one yourself. This configuration with the mtv is going to have some problems even if you get it to mostly work.

Do I still use my nfk 25x eyepiece?

That is the correct adapter, but it probably won't be 100% parfocal with the eyepieces when adapted to your camera (comes with an olympus OM.mount). It will be quite close though. The nfk 2.5x works with it.

If you wamt to get creative though you can make your own viewtopic.php?f=12&t=7329&p=64543&hilit ... pvc#p64543 this has not been met with a lot of enthusiasm, probably because not everyone fancies having plumbing pipe on their scope, but it works.

Right i actually read that post. Thank you.
I kind of see this as a conservation project in parallel to micro biology... so i would like to have the best as designed solution. Then pvc )))

So my nfk Eyepiece need to go in the photomicro adapter L? Amy other tips for an ideal installation? Is the T Adapter going to fit directly on the photomicro adapter L?

Thanks
Tom

Again, the link in post #5 to the relevant page on Alan Wood's site explains what is needed.
You need the photomicro adapter L or a similar third party tube.
According to that article, no Nikon adapter is available for the photomicro L, so you can either remove the Olympus mount and replace it with a Nikon mount, or use a tube from another manufacturer - he shows some examples.

Just for further clarity : The ‘flange to sensor’ distance on a Nikon body is 0.5 mm greater than that on an Olympus OM body ... so it is impossible to make a simple adapter which converts the mount and maintains infinity focus: There are therefore no ‘mass market’ adapters available, and the advice given is understandable.

Look at this on eBay
Olympus OM Lens to Nikon Camera F mount adapter D7200 D810a D5500 D4 D750 D3300

It replaces the Olympus mount on the L adapter.
Note: the bolts do not fit perfectly and require some work (they stick out 0.3 mm and scratch the nikon mount).

Best, deBult.

Probably easier to just get a third party adapter and not worry about it https://rover.ebay.com/rover/0/0/0?mpre ... 3287613355

The photomicro Ls are pretty expensive for what they are imo. It is just an empty metal tube with set screws on one end and a camera mount on the other.

It requires the use of a 10x eyepiece - scroll down the page to see how it installs.

Oh yeah, that could work but it's likely not going to give amazing results. Just the difference in height to make a 2.5x nfk project an image circle like a 1.6x produces a very noticeable degradation in image quality. Better to use the correct photo eyepiece when possible.

Tom,

What you need is a Diagnostic Instruments PA1-10A adapter. It's a direct replacement for the Olympus Photomicro Adapter L, but instead of the Olympus camera mount has a T-ring thread so you can mount any camera you can get a T-ring adapter for. I've used them on both the BH series (BHS), and the BX series (BX-40 and 50), for years with my Canon 5D MkII. Parfocality is not a problem. For full frame you need the NFK 2.5x projection lens you already have.

I have a spare if you're interested. I'm pretty sure I have an F-mount Nikon T-ring on it too.

Or this one:

I bought an adapter from this seller and I was not happy with the quality. It had tubes that were connected insecurely due to unmatched threads. I almost broke my $2000 Nikon camera.

Furthermore, I don't like the idea of using regular 10x eyepieces instead of the NFK relay lenses, because eyepieces do NOT have the proper corrections for the trinocular port. NFK relay lens is a must have for camera applications for best image quality.

Hi, for my BX50's phototube (as mentioned, it 'comes with an Olympus connection') I simply fitted an Olympus--->Canon adapter-ring (cost under £10) and all's perfectly parfocal. This is an infinity system with the 'PE' projection eyepiece rather than the corrected NFK version.

These are the pieces I use (for a Canon of course)....

That works perfectly for canon, not so for nikon, due to flange distance.

Thanks friends. Grasshopper is in heaven....

...so the "Boss" from dealcorner.com is actually a photo tube expert. And those black tubes that are linked from ebay (above), I believe, come from him (even cheaper if you buy direct).

So I am looking at this not only as a pure biology/microbehunter tool, but also as a conservation project, because just touching this BH-2 BHS, is awesome, everything about it is unreal. So.... ...here is a photomicro tube L, standard from dealcorner.com with the adapter all the way to nikon proprietary (I think a T2 standard is being used last). As for parfocality with the eyepieces, I will follow up when I get it. ...but here is something I will just throw out there.... ...anyone else just look at the monitor and almost never look in the eyepiece anyway? Is that sacreligious?
