mechanical stage problem

#1 Post by Maryfox » Sat Jan 25, 2020 6:44 pm

I have a mechanical stage on my student microscope similar to the photo on this page.Image

Worked fine yesterday. Today the Y axis knob will not move. It will not turn clockwise; and turning it counter clockwise screws the knob off. This item is less than 1 yr old. I did look at earlier posts about stages, but did not slog through all the 13+ pages I got when I searched on mechanical stage.

The ones I saw mentioned lubrication. I need advice

Thanks,
Maryfox

Hi Mary,
the first thing I would suggest is to remove the object guide (pictured item in the link) from the stage itself. Then try again whether it moves when not attatched. Perhaps the mounting screw presses it onto the stage with too much force. There will be a rack and pinion drive - is there an object in the teeth of the rack or pinion that blocks the meshing of the teeth?

Hi, Bob -
Thanks for your reply. I disassembled it and still couldn't figure it out. At a cost of $23 I simply ordered a new one. Much less frustrating. I'm using a student scope from AMscope. I'm a rank beginner so it fits my capability at this point.
