I think you would therefore need a Phase objective with a very high NA to manage it.
Mind you, he also shows that using a Phase objective in Brightfield (and I imagine even more so with oblique) retains or at least pays a smaller NA penalty.

David Walker's article Diatom Pleurosigma angulatum - a versatile 'demonstration' subject. demonstrates the NA (Numerical Aperture) penalty that Phase levies.
