Two ciliates from my plancton aquarium in phase contrast

#1 Post by MicroBob » Tue Mar 31, 2020 8:21 pm

Hi together,
I just bought a nice Neofluar 40 Ph2 phase contrast objective and gave it a try with some plancton mix from my plancton aquaria.
Here two ciliates that could have been captured better with a 100:1 objective but I was too lazy and the dwindling oil resources and all...

Great, Bob.
The 40X/0.75 Ph2 Neofluoar is great when free of delamination.

Hi Doron,
while both my 16:1 Neofluar and 40:1 achromat phase objectives are delaminated this one is fine!

Nice to have a Neofluar PH2 40x/0.75

I have yet to add one to my Phase nosepiece

I have been remiss with my Phase of late. Must (metaphorically ) dust them off!

Hi Glen,
so far my phase contrast objective set was very limited, just a good 100:1 Plan and a delaminated Neofluar 16:1 which I haven't tried to repair yet. My 40:1 Zeiss Winkel is heavyly delaminated and it shows. So I was quite happy to get this nice objective in good condition for a good price.
I haven't compared DIC and phase a lot due to the lack of promising phase objectives. But I'm sure that each will have it's application where it excells.

Hi Bob,

40/0,75 Neofluar Ph2 is the only phase contrast objective I have and I too like it a lot. Its great for things like bacteria and algae but also protists especially amoeba.

I have been slowly building up my Phase Objective nosepiece.

I have strict price guidelines so it is a very slow process.

On there now is an achromat 10x/0.22, a Neofluar 16x/0.40, a Neofluar 25x/0.60 and an achromat 40x/0.65

Next on my list is a Neofluar 40x/0.75 and one day perhaps a Plan-Neofluar 63x/0.90

There is so little rush that I forget to look for them sometimes! Mind you I blame the DIC for that!

No delamination on any of them - which is how it should be.

I'd really like to get a 40/0.9 multi-immersion Plan-Neofluar Ph3. These are some of the finest lenses ever made. The 63/0.9 is also on my list.

Unrelated I'd also love to get a Jamin-Lebedeff kit but I guess I'll have to wait a very long time for that

Those are impressive. I can never see the cilia.

Hi Don,
the cilia are accentuated by the phase contrast. Also I edited the image which increased their visibility.
You might try olbique illumination to enhance the visibility.
