Hello from Guam
Hello from Guam
Hi all, just joining and look forward to reading through all the questions and answers within the forum. I purchased a stereo microscope several months ago and a compound microscope is soon on its way.
I live on Guam. I especially enjoy scuba diving, shell collecting, and photography. The microscopes will complement my interests quite nicely.
Cheers,
Bob Abela

Hi rabela, welcome
I am hoping you have an interest in photographing marine plankton from your exotic location!

Re: Hello from Guam
Hello Bob! How serious are you with shell collecting? Do you have an eBay store that sells your extra shells?
I am an avid seashell collector and have spent hundreds of $ on shells. Many of my collection came from Philippines and Japan. I mostly collect aesthetics, colors and forms (interesting structures/shapes), instead of focusing on rarity or size. My favorite species is neritidae.
Let us talk seashells. Please email me at zzffnn at h0tm8il dot com. Remove spaces and replace numbers with the correct letters (I did that to avoid spam emails).
I am guessing you have plans to look at diatoms, radiolarians, foraminifera?
Cheers,
Frank

Re: Hello from Guam
Welcome Bob! I second all the above and would love to see the diversity of plankton/diatoms from your area.
Re: Hello from Guam
Welcome bob, and yahoo...we microscopists love new members and new : 'microscopy world views' from all locations on our small planet! As all folk before have said: welcome, welcome...and the sooner you share macroscopic and compound microscope image captures of your ' neck of the woods'..the better our forum community will be!
charlie guevara, finger lakes/US freshwater micoscopist...please be careful with all that salt water exposure of your microscopes.

Re: Hello from Guam
Forgive me, I was surprised by the responses on my introduction.
Frank (zzffnn) Yes, I’m an avid collector but for a multitude of reasons do not actively sell/trade/exchange. Hope you understand.
Since introducing, I have spent many hours looking under the microscope and am having a blast. Seeing so many different organisms that it is just overwhelming, but I particularly enjoy looking at the multitude of foraminifera, diatoms, copepods and small mollusks.
The camera adapter to the AmScope sucks on the stereo microscope. Chromatic aberrations are really bad but I can get okay results...this guy is about 2.5mm (family Cystiscidae), no idea which species. Some post processing to clean up the image.
Anyhow, I will be visiting more frequently. Again, thank you for the warm welcome and, again, my apologies for not getting back sooner.

Wonderful image!
Typical stereo microscopes are used with non-correcting eyepieces and photo adaptations. But they generally don't acheive very good photo quality as the optics are designed for good free working distance, not resolution.

Re: Hello from Guam
That is exactly what I have learned MicroBob, no regrets. The stereo microscope itself is a wonderful tool to have and I can work within its limitations. Photographs in this magnification range are often accomplished by adapting a microscope objective to a camera system. I'll probably end up doing that.
I did get my compound microscope as well, so I am exploring with that. I only wish I had invested in these microscopes a long time ago. I'm hooked.
