Mix’n’match ‘scope

#1 Post by Zuul » Sat May 23, 2020 6:09 pm

I spotted this on fleabay and it piqued my curiosity. All the components seam to be high quality, though I’m not experienced enough to guess about condition. The Zeiss objectives on a Nikon stand/head is the oddity. I understand that Nikon objectives should be fully corrected, hence the head should not do any further correction. I don’t know about Zeiss of that generation, though. Is this a “good” match? If it is, that seams like a pretty good deal provided things are in good shape.

These are very fine objectives, but probably delaminated .

This is a finite system. Any corrections happen in the eyepieces (since the head is lensless), which in this case are Leitz correctives (usually fine with Zeiss for visual usage). It wasn't insanely uncommon to swap all the objectives and eyepieces on a stand for another brand--I got an old B&L scope that had been kitted out with some nice Zeiss stuff a while back. Produced a great image.
Not every Zeiss 160mm objective is delaminated, though ir is a common problem.
