These wave-like ripple patterns seem to appear and disappear and move in a way that is hard to discern what the 3D structure would be. Are they real or some sort of optical/camera artifact? The file names are the timestamps from where in the video I cropped them from.

Thanks DonSchaeffer and hans

The ciliate is about 3/4 of a millimeter long

The lines you refer to are rows of cilia, as the ciliate changes position they move in and out of focus.

I was experimenting with the camera setup, as I do from time to time. Can't seem to leave things alone :)

In this case it was direct projection on to the camera sensor, using a raised 'normal' 12.5x kpl eyepiece and the 25x Neofluar objective.

Still needs a little fine tuning but I thought the ciliate interesting enough to show.

What do you mean direct projection to the camera lens?

Direct to the sensor. No lens.
