Olympus BH-2 BHS

#1 Post by david_b » Wed Jul 29, 2020 10:38 am

A few months ago I purchased a BHS on eBay.
It arrived in generally good condition but with some issues. After cleaning it up and trying to fix the problems myself with only partial success, I decided to send it off for a professional service.
After completing the job, the engineer sent me this video report....

That should be a pleasure to use now. Congratulations

I would be interested to know what a service like that cost if you don't mind saying.

It might be a practical step to factor in a 'service' on to the purchase price of a used microscope when it is available.

I paid £168 including the cost of returning the scope, plus VAT.

Any thoughts on the eyepiece issue, that he was unable to resolve?

I would contact Carl Hunsinger aka forum member: carlh6902

He is the author of this manual: http://www.alanwood.net/downloads/olymp ... repair.pdf

Update: Just skimmed through the repair manual and found the answer on page 31 'Reinstall the Helical Focus Ring'

Wow it's really hard to find competent service people for anything these days. You're very fortunate to have found this one. Can you imaging and auto mechanic taking the time to send a video and go over what was done to your car. I can't, especially not for a repair bill of less than £200.

Looks like you now have a wonderfully tuned instrument that will last you for the foreseeable future. If it were me I don't think I would be overly concerned with the eyepiece tube issue. If it works fine let it be.

Regards,
Kirby

To be fair, my Toyota mechanic does send me a brief video, but his repair bill for 'a significant number of hours' would be far more than £200!

The issue with the diopter ring running out of range on the left side could be due to an improper tube length on the right side. That does look like a nice scope! The worn gear can be purchased third party in the US.
