I thought so as well, but the brown plate seems to be made of wood. Nicely finished wood. Might be copper but is more like wood.

In image number 6 it looks a bit more coppery.

Logic dictates copper, yes... maybe the top has been lacquered for preservation, to prevent corrosion, notwithstanding the original function of a hotplate...

It is indeed a slide warming table. Sometimes they were made of brass and slotted for the slide. I agree this one is definitely copper. Lacquer would not have taken the heat. Nice kit that's seen little use!
