Paralia sulcata
Actinoptychus senarius
These are fossil diatoms from Dunkirk, Maryland dating back to the miocene age (5-20 MYA).

Great photos. The second one reminds me of a biohazard symbol. Thanks for sharing.

Thanks for the nice images and to the ID of the second - today I saw such in fossil diatoms from Japan.

Not an ID...I meant it looks like the biohazard symbol...sorry for the confusion there.

Thank you Hobbyst and Ray
If you search this diatom on the web you might actually find a descriptive headline such as "The Radioactive Diatom" or similar, so yes its a geometrically perfect radioactivity sign (6 alternating 60˚ sectors)

Like how you've highlighted the geometry of the second one Wes, nice work as always.

Thanks Chris, I decided against stacking the second one through its entire depth exactly as you said to emphasize the geometry.

Nice work!
... dating back to the miocene age (5-20 MYA).
Certainly adds some mystique to them. Hard to imagine so much time.

The Radioactive Diatom is so fitting! Will be giving them a search in a bit - thanks!

These are from a strew slide I bought from Diatom Lab about a year ago. I don't know how he does it but there are virtually no silicates or other junk in the slide, its only diatoms and spicules. At some point I tried making strews myself but I could never get rid of the non-diatom particles and this was when I really appreciated the technique used in the strew I got from Stefano.
