leitz series 600 condenser spring needed

#1 Post by henryr » Fri Nov 20, 2020 1:24 am

I disassembled a 600 series condenser about two years ago and, thanks to help from members of this site, I am now ready to reassemble it. But it appears that, sometime over the last two years, I misplaced/lost one of the two small compression springs that allow control of positioning of the condenser lens axis via the two knobs at the bottom of the condenser. Would anyone have a spare spring that they could part with? I would gladly pay for it including shipping.

Thanks,
henryr

henryr,

I just worked on one of these but don't remember if they're coil springs or leaf springs? I can take one apart and double check the type and size. I should have the correct spring stock to cut them from.

Where are you located?

Thanks for the reply. Over the years Leitz made some with the leaf spring and some with two compression springs. I need one compression spring. I'm in Newington, Ct.. Please don't make one. FYI the dims. are: WD .02, OD .094, FL .305

Thanks,
henryr

henryr,
I'll check my stock against the dimensions you gave and PM you tomorrow.

henryr,

Unfortunately the diameter of my stock is either slightly too big or the spring itself is too light. The closest thing I have to it has a .120" OD and it's too tight.

If someone here has spring stock for an AO model 10 binocular head focus arm that may work. The AO part number in my catalog is 10-110. As supplied the spring is too short but the diameter works and the spring needs decompressed anyway which would compensate for the length. The photo below shows the AO spring next to the spring you need.

You may have some wiggle room with your springs outer diameter. The spring in my condenser measures about .103" and .108" fits with a little room for compression. If you go too big things will start to bind. You can also use a spring with a slightly smaller wire diameter by over compensating slightly with length. It's not an exact science.

If you have a real hardware store near by you could get lucky otherwise I would check with Jones Spring Co. I've ordered hard to find springs from them in the past.
