Anyone know if a Zeiss binocular head, Zeiss part number 4028014, is compatible with the Universal? A Google search turns up nothing.

This one:

https://www.ebay.com/itm/Zeiss-Universa ... 1438.l2649

The listing title includes "Universal", but I'm not altogether trusting of eBay sellers.

The number you have is a serial number and not a part number.

Most 160 TL Zeiss heads will fit your Universal but these are the most common:

The simple early design binocular in white or black like yours listed or in white like this:
https://www.ebay.com/itm/Carl-Zeiss-Bin ... 3323!US!-1

The more modern design like yours:

Or the monocular...usually used in polarized light:

These are commonly used on inverteds but can be used also:

It will but you may find the viewing angle awkward as that head is designed for either a 0 degree or a 90 degree attachment surface, and the universal's is sloped.

This is the correct one: https://www.ebay.com/itm/CARL-ZEISS-GER ... Swdx1aQEeX

By the way the number you quoted is the serial number. The catalogue number of that one is: 473035

The one he listed will fit the Universal and the viewing angle will be fine. Those were first original issue on the Universal/Photomicroscope I and II and will fit the third generation Universal as well.

Thanks!

Looks like it’ll fit and the viewing angle will be okay. I’m seriously thinking of getting this head to replace the one on my Universal. When I had the eyepiece tubes off to fix the issue with the loose lever appearing in the field of view, I noticed that the optics on the right side are either delaminated or the coatings are bad. Perhaps that’s accounting for the Neoflur objectives not working as well as they should.
