Re: WTB: Olympus short-barrel PlanApo 40x and 100x
Thanks for the offer, Micro. However, I think that shipping+taxes would make it too expensive in the end. I'd be willing to eat that if I find a PlanApo, but not the Fluorite, sorry.

Re: Help needed to design adaptor for Mirrorless camera
Parfocality really is the most reliable way to tell if your sensor is located exactly at the intermediate image. I would setup your camera on a tripod and adjust its position until you found the exact position where everything is parfocal. Then make an adapter that will put your camera there. It mig...

Re: Is this Leitz SM LUX any good?
Sounds like a good buy, I am sure you are going to like it. You might want to keep an eye out for an affordable trinocular head anyway, which would make the binocular head redundant as well.

Re: Best DIC options?
I think the best strategy is almost always to buy whatever DIC equipment you can find at a price you are able to pay, and then buy whatever scope you need to use it. Microscope stands are cheap. This probably applies even more to Leitz, where you almost never find any DIC parts.

Re: WTB: Olympus short-barrel PlanApo 40x and 100x
Congratulations on that scope. It is extremely heavy, but ergonomic. BTW, I am quite certain that long barrel objectives can be used on it - at least for brightfield, do not know about other modes of illumination. Thank you! And it is indeed very, very stable to say the least. Eventually, I hope to...

WTB: Olympus short-barrel PlanApo 40x and 100x
Hello, Does anyone have any Olympus short-barrel Plan Apo objectives to sell or trade? I am specifically looking for the 40x 0.95 and the 100x 1.30. Might also be tempted by a 4x or a 20x, but I only have DIC prisms for 10x, 40x and 100x and I've already found a 10x. SB PA.jpg Preferably in Europe. ...

Re: Best DIC options?
One somewhat confusing - and poorly documented - aspect of the Nikon DIC system is that only some versions of the Optiphot stand can accommodate the DIC intermediate tube. The stand needs to have a rectangular cutout immediately behind the nosepiece. I may be wrong, Viktor, but I believe the Optiph...

Re: Epi DIC woes
I do notice when using epi illumination that when things move out of focus they seem to split as they blur. Not sure what's up with that but it doesn't affect normal picture taking. I noticed a very similar effect in the beginning when I was messing around with diy transmitted DIC with two identica...

Re: Microstar IV Camera Setup
In fact, if I read the post right, the 3D printed part was destroyed in the mail, so the eyepiece is held by cardboard. So there is one issue: the eyepiece may not be properly aligned. However, I am still worried about the height of your afocal setup. Afocal setup are almost always more compact that...

Re: Zeiss Universal
I recently adjusted these on a Zeiss Fluoro condenser from this era. I didn't think that I used very much force, but I still managed to split both of the two retaining screws when I tried to unscrew them. So be aware that these are quite brittle. Might be wise to heat or lubricate them a bit first. ...

Re: Nikon E600 DIC, Pola scope soon for sale
A couple messages wondered if it would be possible to sell the DIC components, without the stand and objectives, to someone who already has a Nikon E400, E600, or E800? For the E600 and E800, I'd consider it. Easier to carefully and safely pack and ship. The E400, however, has a fixed nosepiece and...

Re: Pol/DIC
I can't say that for sure. DIC compatibility is determined by several factors, in particular objective focal length and location of back focal plane. Objectives with the same magnification from the same manufacturer will typically have the same focal length and the back focal plane will often, but n...

Re: Pol/DIC
Pol objectives have been checked by the manufacturer to make sure that they are strain-free. This means that the objective doesn't affect the polarization state of the transmitted light. Since both DIC and polarization microscopy rely on polarized light, both techniques need objectives that are stra...

Yes, the old Zeiss fluoro condenser uses 22mm round dichroic mirrors, and 18mm round excitation and emission filters.

Re: Cutting dichroic mirrors with hole saw - help needed!
I've never been able to make good, clean cuts with the glass cutter. I didn't know about the settling time - maybe I've been working too slow. In any case, I feel more comfortable with the hole saw approach. Grinding could still be an option though, especially if I end up needing to reduce a 22mm di...

Re: Cutting dichroic mirrors with hole saw - help needed!
Hi Viktor, instead of drilling with a hole saw you could remove the corners by grinding from the outside. In my view this would introduce less strain in the glass. I have bought the same set of dichroic filters for my Zeiss RS III epic fluo condenser. Bob Yes, I am grateful that you pointed these o...

Re: Cutting dichroic mirrors with hole saw - help needed!
One more question to you, Hobbyst46. How did you dry and clean the dichroic mirror after cutting? If air drying, am sure that there will be at least some streaking from the water? And in general, what is a safe method to clean DMs?

Re: Cutting dichroic mirrors with hole saw - help needed!
Viktor, So I quickly surfed through your post on the photomacrography.net. Interesting. As Pau comments, your set of interference filters is a steal. Such filters, each one and new, are expensive. I like it that you got both long pass and shortpass filters. Very useful ! The fried filters must have...

Cutting dichroic mirrors with hole saw - help needed!
In an earlier thread, Hobbys46 reported success in cutting dichroic mirrors with a diamond hole saw: http://www.microbehunter.com/microscopy-forum/viewtopic.php?p=72470&sid=76f1142f5f6aa4f98eb823f8595a701a#p72470 I have a rather large rectangular Chroma Chroma T400LP beamsplitter (25.5x36mm) that I ...

Re: Fresh water diatoms
Everything does not need to be stacked front to back... nor is it possible in many cases. The rotifer with flash shots you mention are a good example. In many of those the subject is in constant motion and changing its position and shape rapidly. There is no chance to acquire a stack, so you just t...
