Re: Another Aquarium Something
If it's the same as this one: I also find it in my fish tank. Not in the water, but on a very wet glass bridge with algae, just above the water level. Don't know what is is though. P1060444_small.jpg Very similar. The "back" 2/3 of mine has that opaqueness that seems to be internal organs or some ty...

Re: Another Aquarium Something
I guess it is possible, but if it is - it is living underwater - at least enough that it doesn't seem to be in distress or "drowning" as it sits in the drop of water I am watching for an hour or so - off an on.75RR wrote:Looks like a dust mite. Perhaps a contaminated slide or pipette?

Another Aquarium Something
Found another curiosity in my aquarium (at least to me). Looks similar to a beetle in shape - flat on the bottom, humped on top. Estimated to be about .5 mm in size (estimated with calibrated graticule). First 1/3 is transparent the back 2/3 is opaque but does not seem to be solid (internal organs?)...

Re: Chlorophyta algae
Nice find. It has a beautify structure to it, what magnification were you using? One of the things I'm trying to work on is documenting what I'm taking and at what magnification. I received a new MU300 camera for christmas to work better with my T490 trinocular port. I have gone through the steps t...

Re: Chlorophyta algae
Hi FLReef The name of the species is Micrasterias radiosa, an it belongs to Chlorophyta: Zygnematales. Low temp always slow thing down. Rylander TY VM for the reply. Interesting with the identification, I looked it up and other than the level of mass detail the image was exactly that! TY. I presume...

Chlorophyta algae
So another intesting find is what I think is a Chlorohyta algae. I based this on image and color of hte specimin. Although I have to admit I have only seen two examples of these. The water they came from does not show green algae, nor did it appear to be growing in any great abundance in the sample ...

Re: unk poss larvae
The two in the middle look like nauplii (larvae) of Cyclops. Here's the Wikipedia article. Scroll down for an image of the nauplius: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cyclops_(genus) Indeed they do. And as confirmation I got this image yesterday (ignore the scale bar I think I forgot to adjust the soft...

No idea what this is
While perusing a "wild" pond sample this evening I came across this. The "spines" caught my attention at 40x - but at 100x I was pretty set back by what appeared to be a "leg." Anyone have any idea what this may actually be? My thinking was this was some form of plant till seeing the "leg" but it al...

Finally got a "wild" pond water sample from a retention pond here in N Fla (ambient temps 70's day - 37 overnight day before). Not near as much life as I expected but that is probably due to the temps(?). I did find several (three different species) of what I believe are insect/beetle larvae. Any ch...

Re: critters in freshwater algae
I like the names. :) Herbie is a spirotrich ciliate, likely a euplotid ( Euplotes , Aspidisca , etc.), but possibly a hypotrich. Gertrude is also a spirotrotrich ciliate, in the subclass Hypotrichia. In both cases the "flagella" are groups of fused cilia called "cirri." Identification to genus leve...

critters in freshwater algae
Cleaned up a bit of my freshwater aquarium this afternoon and put some algae under the scope to see if there was life. In the past this hasn't been too successful - tonight though I saw lots of critters in there. I have no idea what these are and would appreciate some help identifying them: This fir...

Are there image upload restrictions? I tried to upload an image from this evening but was not able to (probably more user error on my part). I've done some searching and can't find any direct yes/no regarding new member posting images.

Hello from sunny and warm Florida. New user coming in sideways from a Salt Water tank hobby. Found some You Tube videos of the life that exists on the reefs that we can't see. Jumped in and purchased an AmScope M150C-PS25 microscope with a MP35 digital camera. Been trying to find "life" in my Freshw...
