Re: Crazy Crystals

Your photos are wonderful. Some of us amateurs enjoy working with crystals, too. I'm a member of the

Crystal Art Photomicrography group on FaceBook. Some members post remarkable pictures. It's fun to see what will show up.

Re: Displaying my images on YouTube

Thanks for all your comments. As to audio, when I come upon a video with only music, I always mute it. In searching for music for other videos, I've been frustrated looking for free audio clips that I actually like. I purposely make the vids short so I did not think audio necessary, but I agree that...

Displaying my images on YouTube

I have posted some of my favorite images on a YouTube channel. They are all short with no narration or annoying music. I will appreciate your comments and/or questions. Images are on screen for 5 – 7 seconds. Too long? Too short? Improvements? Mary's Microscope https://youtube.com/channel/UC-BSLjwNL...

Rotating Retarder

My new trick: rotating a retarder to get a short movie. This one is Vitamin C mixed with an energy drink under polarized light.

Re: New to the hobby but have experience with microscopy

There is a FaceBook group called "Crystal Art Photomicrography" If you're not on FaceBook, it may be worthwhile for you to join and participate in this group - or at least look at the photos. You can join FaceBook without revealing anything that you do not want known to the world. It is amazing the ...

Thanks to you all.
So many articles and posts that mention retarders do not have a clear explanation for beginners. I truly appreciate your quick and simple responses.

confused about retarders

If I have a retarder, where do I put it?
Please no technical notes about optics or wave plates. I'm just trying to understand how to use a retarder.
Thanks,\

Thanks for your replies.
Unlike most of you, I am currently enthralled with chemicals rather than microbes. Techniques may be different. The images may be blah, interesting, beautiful, spectacular, or just weird.

Heat set: why and when?

I've seen many references to heating slides, but no info on why to do this or when to do this. I need to be educated.
Thanks,

I just now ordered from Esslinger: 8 watch glasses: 32mm, 1mm thick @$1.25 each. Shipping via USPS first class $3.63
The website says that they may be back ordered on some items, but does not specify which ones. At that price I can wait a while if necessary.

Re: The Dirty Cover Glass Blues

I guess I'm not as particular as most of you. I keep a small glass containing water and dish detergent. When I am finished with a slide, I put it into the glass, cover slip and all. When its time to clean, I rinse with hot water, rubbing slightly if necessary. Hand dry with a lint-free cotton dish t...

Condensers - venting frustration

As a rank beginner, it has not been easy to learn about condensers. My student scope did not have one. My big excitement about having a condenser on my new scope was because it has a filter holder. I wanted to learn about how to use it. My internet searches brought up all kinds of technical informat...

Heat Drying

In Oliver's video 028 on Vitamin C under polarization, he shows heat drying the slide. On the Facebook Amateur Microscopy group, I see references to heat drying. I know how, but I don't know when. I experiment by mixing various substances/chemicals but I don't know when heat drying is appropriate. G...

Re: AmScope

My first microscope was an Amscope M149 that came bundled with an eyepiece camera. My one complaint is that the LED began to flicker which was annoying. My other complaint is not about the microscope: I wanted a mechanical stage. I went through 3 of them that failed because it is possible to run the...

Re: Build Your Own Needel Puller, Part Two

OK, I'm a beginner so I need some education on this.
What is the purpose of the needle?
Where is the needle to be pulled? Embedded in something?
Why pull the needle? to reuse it?
Looking forward to learning,

Re: dark field filter

I cut a circle of semi-rigid plastic using a filter as a template. Somewhere on the net I read about a "dime" filter so I cut a circle the size of a dime from black paper and attached it using double-stick tape. It ain't pretty, but it works. I'm looking forward to playing with this. Here's my first...
